Why Průhonice Park belongs in a conversation about Prague’s heritage

Prague’s World Heritage story does not stop at churches, palaces and streets. UNESCO includes Průhonice Park as a separate component of the Historic Centre of Prague property. That inclusion offers a useful reminder: a landscape can carry cultural significance through its design as well as through the buildings associated with it.

The park’s own introduction describes a landscape park outside Prague, with composed views and collections of domestic and non-native woody plants. These are complementary features. A tree can be part of a botanical collection while also helping frame a view, mark a transition or change the character of a path.

Approach such a place differently from an exhibition of isolated objects. Look at what comes into view gradually, what is screened and how a path changes the relationship between foreground and distance. A pond or a group of trees can be read both as a physical feature and as part of the arrangement that shapes a visitor’s experience.

Living material complicates the idea of preservation. The useful question is not whether every leaf or branch remains as it once was, but what documented qualities the landscape is intended to retain. The park’s description emphasizes spatial composition alongside plant collections, giving readers two starting points for interpretation without suggesting that a garden is a static architectural artifact.

Its separate location also matters when planning. Inclusion in Prague’s named heritage property does not place the park within the historic centre’s walking circuit. Consult the park’s own visitor information for access rather than assuming arrangements from a city-centre itinerary. Culturally, the connection is strong; geographically, it is a distinct destination with a different kind of heritage to read.
